JCDecaux installed five large advertising billboard totems alongside the road network at the Trafford Centre. Custom curved sections of Hi-Lite RGB tube create feature lighting which can be set to tone with the current advertising campaign.

The brief

Outdoor media specialists JCDecaux required an eye-catching lighting feature for their new billboard totems at the Trafford Centre, Manchester. They wanted to be able to change the colour of this lighting quickly and easily, to suit the particular advertisement on display. The solution had to be physically robust and fully weather resistant to survive the exposed and unmanned locations.

The Visive solution

Visive supplied custom curved sections of Hi-Lite RGB LED contour tubing to provide an intense multi-coloured lighting solution to the totems. Six oval hoops of Hi-Lite encircle the fixture, with the top three hoops raked at an angle to echo the top of the totem column. A customised version of the Visive DMX master controller was used to allow simple setting of colours from within each unit.

Features and benefits

Hi-Lite RGB combines all the features of the standard Hi-Lite range - weather proofing to IP66, robust design, simple 'plug and play' installation - with a full colour mixing control system, allowing the illuminated colour to be selected from a palate of over 16 million colours.

Visive's standard DMX master controller allows operators to select from a range of pre-programmed colours and effects. For this application the customer required that the controller allowed an operator to set relative brightness levels of red, green and blue directly. Visive developed a custom version of its standard controller to facilitate this. The solution enables a new colour for a particular advertising campaign to be developed on an off-site test rig, with the RGB values for this colour then being passed on to a local operations crew. The local crew can them dial these values into the master controller within the sign.
