Colour-changing LED Edge-Lit Panels

Selfridges, Trafford Centre, Manchester

Scriptus installed 40 metre-square edge-lit panels suspended from the store ceiling in the mens fashion department at Selfridges at the Trafford Centre, Manchester.

Various pre-set progammes were provided, allowing shop staff to select from a range of static and moving lighting effects.

The brief

Scriptus were commissioned by Selfridges to design and construct a ‘flexible eye-catching architectual lighting feature’ for installation into the mens fashion department at the newly refurbished Trafford Centre store. Scriptus turned to Visive to provide the RGB LED modules and control gear required to turn their concept into reality.

The Visive solution

By customising an existing Visive RGB module design to perfectly suit the clients requirements, Visive were able to provide an on-time and within-budget solution. Using a control unit previously developed for dance-floor applications, each RGB panel can be individually addressed. A 3rd-party DMX stand-alone controller – sourced and programmed by Visive – provides a vast range of static and dynamic lighting effects.

Features and Benefits

The LED modules we supplied use high-quality Osram RGB LEDs which provide a low-maintenance solution for the lighting feature. The low-power requirements coupled with high efficiency mean that the LEDs emit very little heat compared to conventional lighting and therefore present little extra load on the store’s air-conditioning.

Visive provided a simple push-button user interface to the DMX controller, allowing shop staff to select the desired lighting effect to complement the department theme. For example, during the Christmas period a red and white cyclic effect can be selected, whilst during the summer, cooler blues and greens can slowly fade through each panel.
