The full-colour illuminated floor presents many opportunities for the creative club light jockey. It can even display video!

The brief

Network Lighting Designs were commissioned by Flamingos Nightclub in Blackpool to create a stunning full-colour illuminated dance floor. As a long-standing customer, NLD turned to Visive to provide an LED solution.

The Visive solution

Visive had already supplied NLD with a single-colour LED tile system for use in their glass-topped illuminated floors. Adapting the system to provide a full-colour solution required a fundamental re-examination of the approach, particularly to the power and control system. To make installation and commissioning straight forward, Visive developed a bus-based system, with each full colour RGB tile plugging into a common cable loom which provided both power and data to the tile. A new combined power supply and control unit was developed to interface the floor to the house DMX lighting control system.

Features and benefits

By combining the power and data onto a single 3-core cable bus, installation was straightforward. This meant that Network Light Designs installation crews were on-site for the minimum time. The pre-configured bus cable was simply laid out under the floor and then each LED tile unit is plugged into it. As well as making installation and comm

issioning a snap, this solution also keeps the amount of cabling required, and therefore cost, to an absolute minimum.
As with many other Visive solutions the LED system itself was designed to run on 46V d.c. This keeps the supply current lower than would be required on a 12V or 24V system, which in turn allows the use of much smaller and more cost-effective cabling and connectors.
